Have you ever seen a green moss ball with a velvety texture in aquariums? That’s a Marimo ball!
Recently, our ACE Biosphere students had the chance to dive deeper into understanding these fascinating organisms and their ecological benefits during a Marimo workshop by Monash University! They learnt that these moss balls play an important role in maintaining a balanced aquatic environment by absorbing waste materials and toxic nitrates, which are harmful to all aquatic life!
They were also taught how to grow and care for these unique algae. It was a fun and educational experience where students learnt about the type of environment the marimos thrive in. Not only that, they also got to decorate their mini aquariums with colourful stones and adorable sea-themed figurines! Equipped with this knowledge, our students can now nurture these a-moss-ing Marimo balls and help them flourish alongside other aquatic life!
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jully Tan and her team from Monash University for organising this enriching workshop. Your guidance and expertise have inspired our students and provided them with invaluable knowledge and skills.
